We are delighted to announce that Sethuraman Estates has once again obtained Q Robusta certification for its RKR and RKR Peaberry lots this year.
BANGALORE (July 23, 2013) – Two new Robusta coffees from Sethuraman Estates have become the second and third coffees obtaining Q Robusta™ certification by the Coffee Quality Institute. Sethuraman Estates’ 2013 Robusta Kaapi Royale (RKR) and RKR Peaberry join the farm’s 2012 RKR crop to remain the only Robusta coffee farm meeting the program’s rigorous standards for fine quality thus far.
“We are stunned and extremely honored to have been recognized as producing the only certified Fine Robusta coffees in the world for a second year,” stated sixth generation coffee farmer and owner of Sethuraman Estates, Mr. Nishant Gurjer. “Furthermore, within India, domestic green grading standards stipulate that peaberry coffees are inferior to others, which we have long believed is not the case from our independent tastings. It is very exciting to see our own results validated by an independent panel of international experts.”
In a process similar to industry standard Q grading for Arabica varieties, Q Robusta™ Coffees are evaluated by three Licensed Q Robusta™ graders under the Coffee Quality Institute’s Q System by one of its authorized In-Country Partners. Coffees successfully meeting program standards to be considered Fine Robusta receive a Q Robusta™ certificate. Those that do not meet the minimum requirements receive a technical report but are not listed in on the institute’s website.
Arabica and Robusta coffees certified by CQI are listed in the Q Coffee database at http://www.coffeeinstitute.org along with a copy of each certificate and compiled scores from the evaluation.
“India provides some of the world’s most valuable coffee types for espresso blends, yet these same exotic coffee types are seldom offered as single origins,” wrote veteran reviewer Ken Davids in his summary of October’s reviews. “On the other hand, the majestic, deeply forested old India coffee estates do produce quietly distinctive Arabicas capable of pleasing even the most purist of coffee drinkers.”
Top-scoring Kaapi Royale coffees included a Selection 9 pulped natural Arabica (91 points) submitted by roaster Miguel Meza of Hawaii, a natural processed Arabica (90 points) from Zingerman’s Coffee Company of Ann Arbor, Michigan and Sethuraman Estate’s Mandarin CxR Cogenesis into Robusta (89 points) from Paradise Roasters of Minnesota.

BERKLEY, CALIF. (April 8, 2009) – Sethuraman Estate has received a 90-point score out of a possible 100 for its Sethuraman Sitara Mandarin coffee from veteran coffee reviewer Ken Davids of Coffee Review. The score is the second highest given by an Indian Robusta single origin coffee; the highest scoring coffee, with 94 points, was another produced by Sethuraman Estate.
Coffee Review founder Ken Davids describes the flavor as “Deep aroma: sweet nut, hints of orange, toast and vanilla. Smooth, buttery mouthfeel and pungent flavors of cedar, more orange and caramel, toasted grains and a hint of flowers.”
The Sitara Mandarin reviewed was roasted by Paradise Roasters of Minnesota and is available for retail sale as a member of its S.O. or single origin espresso collection.
The Sethuraman Sitara will be available for tasting by industry professionals on Friday, April 17, 2009 between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM at the Kaapi Royale Coffee SCAA hospitality suite in the Embassy Suites hotel, adjacent to the 2009 Specialty Coffee of America Exposition in Atlanta.
